Trains are watched, cities photographed, and the past bravely explored as much as the future. Day trips, overnighters, vacations, and family visits are all opportunities for everything from trains to cityscapes to landscapes to ..... I have taken up reading, <i>Swiss</i><i> Family </i><i>Robinson</i>. This is a book, I used to read on vacation every year. I would start the beginning of each vacation, making it only one two or even three chapters into the book. Than vacation got interesting. I would find myself involved in whatever we were doing. If we were at the beach I would be enjoying the the surf. Or it could be that we were in the mountains and I was watching the skyline for all the the mountains in the background. About evening time I was too tired to even consider reading.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I got to read 2 or 3 chapters, at the most. Now this will become the book that I will be reading while traveling. Instead of using the full book which is a little bit heavy and that's probably why I gave up on reading at these vacations. I have the book on my phone, computer, and tablets. So it's available anywhere, anytime that I have the time to read. I have never had a dedicated e-reader but I've always used the phone or my tablet. I have one phone plus two tablets plus a laptop and whatever book I want to read is available on all four.</p>
<p dir="ltr">I prefer using the phone. It is lightweight, sits in my pocket, take it out to read, put it back when I'm not doing any more reading, then I did the whole thing again later. In the morning or afternoon, I take my books on my phone or my tablet, find a nice quiet place, maybe the mall, maybe the library, or perhaps a coffee shop, take out my book on my phone and read away. I did that this morning, will probably do it again tomorrow, sometime either morning or afternoon and the place will vary as it always does. This is the book form that I take with me on the train or plane or just riding with a friend.</p>

Transfer between transits means time to explore or whatever. A good book will pass the time, both in station and on board. Picture taking will take time and give good souvenirs. I have been in Washington a number of times so, sightseeing may not be as unique as I would like. More than once, I have been by the monuments and the museum many times. Train watching and Metro riding, will require some time. Union Station always has something good to see. There is always a private car in the station. If you want good train watching you have to go north of the station for run-by. South of the station is good. There is one public space that overlooks the tunnel portal from the south into Union Station (the last time I was there, I was approach by police. The first thing you should say, in such case is "do you want me to leave?")</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Overnight train travel means not much waking time to watch, but there is always NYC light up in the night. Arrival in Boston, early morning, ready for a day of sight seeing. First question: what Boston Station to arrive at? Route 128 is a out of town station with many train watching chances: commuter and Amtrak. Back Bay is in the middle of the Social areas, but not good watching. South Station is the terminus of the line and in a good part of downtown (just south of the station is good). What side of town, you want to be in, will also determine the station. This trip has become a north side trip with most of my sightseeing in Boston or north of the river, looking around Cambridge and Alewife. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
When I first arrived in Boston to live, 35+ years ago, for the first month, I lived at the YMCA about two blocks from work. I than got a sublease in Cambridge, for a month or two. It was north of Cambridge Square and Harvard Yard and near what is know as Potters Square. The Red Line Subway was only completed as far as Harvard (now it goes through Potters Square all the way to Alewife) so I had to take the bus from there. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
My first plan was to go past the old apartment. which I lived in and go to Alewife, to check that out. I never have been all the way to Alewife. It is not a major detour nor something major to see. This segment is:<br />

My first excursions were planned to follow a route. Steam excursions were frequent in the 1960's and 1979's. Add to that the Freedom Train, Chessie Steam Specials, Chessie Safety Express, and all the Southern steam specials. These were the mid 1970's and rumor had it that Southern was going to discontinue the Crescent Limited from Washington to New Orleans and turn it over to Amtrak. I decided to take the Crescent from Washington to Atlanta, which was its destination three days a week with extended to New Orleans on Tuesday and Thursday (I my have that wrong, but I am working from memory). Of course Southern kept it for a little longer before turning operation of the Crescent to Amtrak. So! I took the Crescent to Atlanta, spent the day, and return that night back to Washington.<br />
<br />
I normally use both destination and route in combination to plan my trips. Looking at the Boston trip, I began with destination. Here, I plugged my home of Cary, NC with Boston being the destination. Amtrak's website, will take either the Silver Star or the Carolinian from Cary, NC to Washington, DC. From DC, they recommend the Northeast Regional, departing around 10:00 pm to Boston, an overnight train, with arrival in Boston around 8:00 am. Considering that a return trip begins at 9:30 with connection in DC after an overnight trip. It would be conceivable to do a single day in Boston as an excursion with sleeping overnight on the train.<br />
<br />
In this one day trip to Boston, I set out to see what I could see. I lived in Boston in the 1980's. Part of that was in Cambridge and part was in Lynn, with my first months at the YMCA near Copley. I worked near the Copley Library. In fact, is next door to what is now Copley Place. It was under construction when I lived there.<br />
<br />
Planning begins with starting point and destination, than layout route. In a trip from Car, NC to Boston, MA, we lay out two trains. Transfer can occur any where from Richmond, VA to Washington, DC. Richmond is nice: early off and early back on. Fredericksburg, VA limits what train to start on. Alexandria is good as is DC.Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-80042476204571665542019-04-07T19:31:00.002-07:002019-04-07T19:31:56.594-07:00April 7Since my Selma trip, which I wrote little on, it was a straight forward trip. I started planning other trips. I another trip to Raleigh, to watch trains, at the train station. I have planned other trips which I may or may not take. Most recently, I took to planning or revising a trip from my home port in Cary to Florida. I had worked three, before. The first was to Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa. The first draft did not include Tampa because I passed though Tampa and did see the two railfan sites, the airport monorail and the streetcars downtown. However, the final revision did include Tampa. The second plan took in Southern Florida with Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. However, I had to combine them in a third option.<br />
<br />
As fate would have it, rumors of the high speed, Brightline was materializing. And is not partly in use. It is not Virgin trains. This warranted a bit of revision to the old southern Florida plans to, at least, see Virgin Trains. However, I generated a new option to include watching and riding Virgin trains. This still needs final revisions and corrections before being taken. I am very tempted to take this as my next excursion.Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-45653119269493879372019-02-09T18:45:00.002-08:002019-02-09T18:45:59.267-08:00The trip<div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">

As so happens, the Silver Star was running over an hour late. It is about 30 minutes until the Carolinian and my trip to Selma, NC, for a day of train watching. </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 10pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">Around 9.39, a CSX south bound freight came through, but I was not in a position to film, which is standard for me. </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 10pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">On board the Carolinian, it was on time. I could not get clear videos in Cary. In Selma, l rushed and did get video of the departure. To my delight, I was pulled by phase III Paint scheme.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">A video which I have bookmarked is "Railfans and Police Don't Mix." </span><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Often railfans might feel that way. I have been confronted about a half dozen times. A couple of times, the confrontation was by Yard Masters. One was to stop me from taking pictures of the yard. He gave me the old post 9/11 reason. I did ask if he wanted me to leave and he said I could not take pictures but I could stay but put my camera away. Another yardmaster may not have wanted me to leave but the dialogue was a bit odd. I was at the throat of the yard. I could not be seen from the office, he did stop as he left. I was first asked, where did I park my car. I had parked back off of the yard but thought that his concern was my trespassing so I asked where the RR property line was. The confrontation was friendly, not accusative. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">While in Cleveland, while watching the light rail, I was just beginning to watch at a particular station. I had talked to one policeman who was with a dog, more about the dog. I had not yet taken out the camera, at that point. After talking to him, a very friendly conversation, and he moved on, I took out my camera. Soon, I saw transit police, two officers. They approached and said they had a call about me taking picture. I corrected them that I was mostly taking video. We had a very friendly conversation, some jokes told. Note that this conversation came as a result of a call they gotten and were checking it out.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">I was in Newark, NJ, after the morning in Trenton, NJ, watching light rail. I got off the light rail was beginning to look for a good place to watch the light rail, as well as getting a feel of the setting, as a tourist would. I stopped in the station to check the battery on my recorder, while looking at the setting. I crossed the track and moved to a place to sit, I was confronted by someone complaining about me taking pictures of him (I did not take any, at that point, much less of him). He called the police who came soon after. the local police and I had a nice conversation and than they went their way. I did show my only video that I had taken, which was not much and early in the day. At that point, my camera in my camera bag, so it was out of courtesy that I let her see what I had.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">First to be noted that police will only get involved if a complaint or call is received. They might stop to investigate if we are in a sensitive location. By that, I mean, not a normal place. One video shows the police reacting to a night video party, on railroad property. That would be unusual, at the least. It was local police that confronted the railfans. Railroad managers would be concerned about safety. Plus to protect the company from liability.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As railfans, there should be things to remember when approached by those question us. Don't be argumentative and defensive. Never give more details than needed. For instance do describe yourself as involve in the hobby of railfanning. Be truthful but not too much. Another employee gives you permissions, but don't bring that up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The oddest confrontation with police came in Washington, DC. I had chosen a location after the tunnel into Union Station. I took the subway from Alexandria. Instead of bringing everything, I just took a 6" tripod. The camcorder was hanging around the next while traveling, with the tripod not open, When I got to the location I set the camcorder down using the tripod, but not setting up for recording. A security officer came up and was to that I could take picture, but I could not use the tripod (even as small as it was).</div>

I did come up with my next trip. I will take the Carolinian to Selma, NC. Selma is where the Carolinian and Star move west toward Raleigh and Cary. The Star goes south at Cary and the Carolinian continues west. Selma is a crossroads as well. It is an hour by train and 45 minutes by car. The Star does not stop in Selma. I leave in the morning on the train.Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-73632866448838839282019-02-07T04:38:00.001-08:002019-02-07T04:38:24.351-08:00My Future Trips, part 1 & 2<br />
Looking ahead, I had planned out a trip to Memphis TN. Two railfan attractions and a few others, makes Memphis a good trip. We have a hanging monorail and streetcars in Memphis. Using Amtrak website, a trip to Memphis, had to go via Chicago. Another option, but not good, would to go via New Orleans. Via Chicago meant arriving in Chicago in the morning and leaving in the evening, both going and coming. I would arrive in Memphis in the morning and leave in the evening. So, I would have two days in Chicago, which could be used for site-seeing and rail-fanning. The connection in Washington is too short to be reliable so I would have to spend the night there. I came up with another, more expensive but nice option. Instead of spending the night in DC, take the overnight train to Boston and take the Lake Shore Ltd to Chicago. I would still have the overnight, but on a train. The return trip from Chicago would be via The Cardinal, through WVa. But spending the night in Manassas, VA which would give me a different set of views.<br />
<br />
I also had planned three trip to Florida. The first and easiest was North Florida: Orlando, Tampa, and Jacksonville. The next was to Miami and finally, to north and south Florida. During the panning of this trip, there was the development and first operation of <i>Brightline</i>, high speed train. One improvement will not come for a coupe of years will be the Miami to Orlando run. Now it only goes to South Palm Beach. I might wait to the expansion starts. Taking the Silver service to Orlando and <i>Brightline</i> to Miami.<br />
<br />
Both these plans were redrawn to use flying as an option to Amtrak.<br />

There was little planning for this trip. I had thought about taking a day in Colonial Williamsburg, where I lived 40 years ago, but decided that a library trip would be more productive. I got home, took a few days to get video edited and posted to YouTube. I am a believer in editing. I have seen video that look like they posted raw video. I take the leader and unproductive parts out.<br />
<br />
First step in this process is to copy the video from the camcorder or camera or phone, leaving the originals on the device for the present. After copying the file on the computer, from the devise, I give it a raw file number. It is in my raw video file, the last number plus one. I enter this progressive for all raw files. Even if the raw file is added to others or is not used, it gets a separate number. My final Byrd Park video required 5 raw files. To this number, I build the final file name for raw. After editing these files are place in a file for raw data, just in case I need to come back to them.<br />
<br />
Once editing, the video will be filed on my computer and the appropriate ones will be uploaded to YouTube. All done! I finished the last thing this afternoon when I took stills off the video.<br />
<br />
This trip was little to plan, and had some changes as I went. Now to work on some of my next,<br />

I decided that I might stop where I might watch and video, on my way down I 95 and US 301, on my way home. Looking at my memory as well as the map, I would pull off the interstate and take 301 south of Skippers, find a place and watch. I stopped at the crossing, at Skippers, to see how good it was. Southbound was good but northbound not good as far as my standards go. Looking south, I did see what I thought might be a trains headlight. It was just a reflection off a metal shed. I than looked north and there is was. Even if I am checking a site out, I take my camcorder and camera, just in case something should come by. As luck would have it, a south bound freight. I did not have time to get my tripod, so I videoed the train, hand held.<br />
<br />

<br />
After this train went past, I decided to continue on 301 until I got to a better place. I lived in Weldon, NC for a while and knew the area well. I decided that Halifax, NC would be the best place to stop and watch. I drove through town to find a pace to get lunch, Before I got back on the bypass, An Amtrak came through. As close as I can figure, it was a late Silver Star, Amtrak 92. I first stopped for a hot dog for lunch. I pulled over where I would watch and unfortunately, a south bound freight came through, before I could get set. I got settled in, set up my tripod, and was getting settled when the northbound Carolinian, Amtrak 80 comes by:<br />
<br />

<br />
Over the next several hour, two freights came though. After I got home and began to get my video ready, I realized that the first of the two was the one that passed me in Skippers. I must have been delayed because of the Amtrak and the northbound freight. I was not trying to chase it. In fact I got my hot dog and got lost, in the meanwhile.<br />

<br />
Finally, Amtrak 89, Palmetto, Southbound, finished out my afternoon:<br />

As we can see any watch session combines luck and knowledge. Luck will cause us to miss and luck will allow us to catch the trains we want.Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-91342781832159114342019-01-10T04:09:00.002-08:002019-01-10T06:20:55.001-08:00Sunday and Monday in Richmond, VAMy stay in Richmond, VA was without watching trains. On Monday, I went to the State Library to work on genealogy. I also took the slow surface road so I could see changes in the city. I took a stop at the Virginia Historical Society, to donate some documents to the Society. I did a lot of work in the library but little in new information obtained. I went to church on Sunday Morning. I lived in Richmond when I accepted the call to preach. I go back one Sunday a year to worship with my home church. Sunday afternoon, I went to Bird Park and took some video and only three stills.<br />

I haven't taken any trips recently and just watching beside the railroad. i am in Richmond, VA now and have not done any train watching to name. I go home tomorrow with no real watching to be done. I come to Richmond to visit friends. Before I accepted tjt call to preach, I lived in Richmond but that was 27 years ago. Much had change, half for the better and half for the worst. I will go by the State Library to research some on my Virginia ancestors. I may or may not stay the day. Tomorrow I drive home.<br />
<br />
I have been planning trips, which I may or may not take. I will talk about that later. I do think about this a lot but just don't get to writing.Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-35261569123033081062018-11-19T06:07:00.000-08:002018-11-19T06:07:21.409-08:00My Next Trip, Part 3I have a lot of thoughts about future trips. I love to take the overnight and tour the full day. Boston is a favorite trip, for this. A nice excursion involves Chicago to Memphis. Memphis has a hanging monorail, which is unique. From Cary, NC just take the Carolinian or Silver star to Washington and the overnight Capitol Limited to Chicago. One problem, the layover time means Washington, overnight. There are a few other way, like going to NYC and transfer to the Lake Shore Limited. I came up with unique trip.<br />
<br />
Take the Star or Carolinian to a transfer point for the northeast limited, overnight to Boston. There are several places to do the transfer. In Boston, wait a few hours and take the lake shore from Boston to Chicago. Instead of a motel room in Washington, sleep on the train. From Boston another overnight to Chicago. In projection would have me spend the day in Chicago touring. Than the overnight to Memphis to spend the day. Two overnight train trip going. Sleep on the train. That night return overnight to Chicago, spend the day in Chicago and overnight to Manasas, Why Manasas, you think? First, Take the Cardinal from Chicago would still mean an overnight stay in DC. Instead, stop in Manasas for a cheaper room, but still on the commuter rail line to DC. There we have a number of options for trains, including the Virginia Railway express, the Crescent.<br />
<br />
I have been slow in taking my next trip. Now the holidays are upon us so I need to wait til after New Years. I will take my traditional trip to Richmond, VA. I do this around the First and I go to church that first Sunday of the new year. I go back to the church I attended before I became a pastor. The first Sunday was the most ideal time for a pastor to leave his congregation behind. He/She cannot go anywhere between Thanksgiving, and Christmas, because of all the church activities going on. Now, as a retire pastor, I still have family things to take care of, so I still put things off. However, the holidays are not a good time for exploratory travel.Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-76522433123638630332018-11-04T20:43:00.000-08:002018-11-04T20:43:25.223-08:00My Next Trip, Part 2I moved from Boston because of a girlfriend. She was an old girlfriend which I ran into, about a month before moving to Boston. She ask that I keep in touch. After settling in Lynn and about six months later, I was contacting old friends to let them know where I was. She was the only one who answered. A few months of writing, she came to Boston to see me and I made a trip back to Virginia to visit family and visited with her at the same time. I moved from Boston to be closer to her and her daughter, who she shared custody with. So, less than a year later I move from Boston. Because of the circumstance, I tried to tell myself that I did not like Boston. It was 25 years before I went back for a visit in 2010. I took a week off for this trip. I took Amtrak to Boston and took mostly the subway and commuter rail, to the places I wanted to see.<br />
<br />
These were the days before Internet and personal computers. In exploring the area before and during my visit, I relied on maps and tourist information so I missed seeing a number of places, because I didn't know about them. I had more interest in returning to places I was familiar with while living there<br />
<br />
I moved to a town near Hamlet, NC and put Hamlet and Boston into the website to see how they would take me to Boston. They recommended the Silver Star to Washington, DC and the overnight Northeast Regional from Washington to Boston. It is about an 7 and half hour layover in DC with leaving DC after 10 PM. I used an alternative by making the layover in Alexandria, VA. This lessened the layover by about almost an hour and but the station closed before the train arrived. I spent this layover touring the Washington, DC area.<br />
<br />
I stayed near Copley Square, around the corner from where I worked, 25 years before. I did rent a car one day so I could take in the north shore where I lived. That gave me the ability to see High Tower and Lynn woods, in Lynn. I took a drive to Fort Independence in south Boston.<br />
<br />
Just for fun, after getting home, I looked a planning a day trip in Boston. I would take train overnight to Boston and return over night. I would arrive early and just spend the day. I laid out a day of train watching, mostly north station trains and a piece of all 4 subway lines. I eventually took that trip. In thinking about another trip, I chose other, more I may decide to heading through Downtown Crossing and going to the commons and surrounding. Copley was nice along with the Prudential Center. Adding a lot of tourist sites and less trains.<br />
<br />
<br />Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-41281442164169213772018-11-01T14:09:00.000-07:002018-11-01T14:09:19.062-07:00My Next Trip, Part 1I keep thinking ahead to future excursions. I have spent some time exploring the possibility of Florida as a destination, for one of my one to five (seven) day excursions. My first excursion plan included north Florida from Tampa back to Jacksonville. Some years ago, I drove the northern Florida train watching route and watched the streetcars and airport people mover, in Tampa. When I arrived in Orlando, it was Sunday and the commuter rail did not run on Sundays. So, on to Jacksonville and learned that their monorail did not run on Sunday, as well. So a return to north Florida would be nice. Another trip would be Miami, but that is a full day, and not over night, travel, from Orlando, Tampa or Jacksonville. It has some good things to see. There is the airport transit, the light rail (third rail metro style), downtown people mover, and commuter rail. Instead of taking the train, I could fly on the long hauls and watch from their. However, if I wait a few years, Brightline will be finished between Orlando and Miami. It is now in Miami and runs to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. I would be a wonderful train to watch and ride.<br />
<br />
Recently, I have been thinking about Boston, again. My first experience in Boston was unintentional. In 1978, I took visit of New England, with the plan to bypass Boston, and visiting Plymouth. I had a problem with directions, so I pulled off the turnpike and found a place to park. It so happens that that place was overlooking the train shed of South Station. I did not know it at the time but learned it, later. I did got some nice railroad pictures. At that time, you could see anything run on Amtrak and Boston commuter rail. Thus an Amtrak pulled by a D&H diesel or on old BM pulling commuter rail could be seen.<br />

My first intentional experience was when I first went to Boston to attend a work seminar in 1982. As I was waiting for the train to take home, I went to Downtown Crossing with another participant. We went to the department store so he could buy a souvenir to take home for his kid. The department store is still there, according to google but it has change names after a merger.<br />
<br />
That summer I answered a notice about a job in Boston and moved that October. I first lived at the YMCA near where I worked, for about a month and than moved to a sublet in Cambridge, rented initially by a co-worker. I finally moved to the North Shore, three blocks from Central Square and train station, in Lynn (Lynn, Lynn, city of sin....lol). I did some train watching as well as touring, during that year. Of course there are traiins, both near South Station and in Lynn. Still, anything would be running. Note that old BM RDC's were used as cars. The motors had been disabled and using only for heat.<br />

Besides trains, I did enjoy the sights of Lynn. It is remarkable that the only pictures. taken in Lynn, was those of the Goldfish pond a few blocks from where I lived. It was a nice place to go to just relax. It was not until I visited back that way that I took other pictures. That is remarkable because a lot of summer evening would have me walk the four blocks to Lynn Shore and spend an hour or so, after an early supper. That was before cell phones so it took work to lug my 35 mm camera.<br />

A new station is now open and my excursion was to see this new station. This new station is really a remodeled factory or warehouse that the city remodeled. They kept features of the old warehouse in they left the old cranes in the ceiling. This is going to be more that a train station. It will be a transportation center, for buses as well as trains. There has been talk of commuter rail and light rail in the region, but that may be years away.</div>

I am not a beach, amusement park, or recreation person. I may look at and may photograph a ski area but you will never catch me skiing, intentionally. I like the ocean view but not swimming in the ocean. I will go by and enjoy a visit to a restore village, or an old house that has been preserved. I might even visit a historic site. So, in looking at Boston, a visit to the bay is to see the bay not to use the bay for recreation. OK I love the beach to people watch (girl watch). I go to the state fair, not to ride rides but to look at the exhibits and animals. I do like to watch the people riding rides and playing the concessions.<br />
<br />
One thing I concluded was that both of my train watching sites were not so good. I selected another on the Lowel Line, that had a low platform and nice view of the train (I think) West Medford. As I looked at it on the map I came across a historic site, not far: <span style="color: black; font-size: 10pt; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><a href="http://www.royallhouse.org/" style="text-decoration-line: none;">Royall House and Slave Quarters</a></span>. I put in my idea list and could visit it, on a future day-trip or extended time away. I than looked up other historic and interesting places to visit on a future trip. I may or may not visit them.<br />
<br />
I took out some previously outline excursions and might take one of them. I did make some alterations to them and look at alternative versions. I like to go to Florida, Miami, Orlando, and Jacksonville. Another good excursion starts with a overnight to Chicago and than to Memphis, to see a suspended monorail. There are others, that I have done, each with variations.Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-21804755873054779392018-07-25T04:29:00.002-07:002018-07-25T04:31:05.710-07:00Final Notes On This ExcursionThe train loaded in Boston and home I go. I actually got some sleep, on the train. 10:30 the next morning I arrive in Richmond, Main Street. So as the train departs, . . .<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/g6dgQ3BV4h0/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/g6dgQ3BV4h0?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
I reflect on how it could be better while omitting the shortfalls and I begin looking at future trips.<br />
<br />
One thing that I do not always have control is the nature of platforms. At 128, there were two platforms, one northbound and the other southbound. They were high platform. When I take and look at pictures and video I want to see the full train, top to bottom. A high platform will hide the wheels sets/ This arrangement can overlook this problem with videoing accross the track. It means being at the end of the platform on the side where the train will load. You video that train before it get to the platform while the other direction is not obscured by the platform. When I looked Anderson, It had the disadvantage of having high platforms, central of the two lines. I do not like to use these as watch sites. It seemed from the research that the parking lot was an alternative, however my research was wrong. Another drawback at Anderson was that I could not go all the way to the end of the platform, in one of the directions. I had done some research on Winchester and it would have been better, if my research was correct. I prefer low platforms.<br />
<br />
One note at this point, this was mostly a train watching trip. As I look at other trips have varying degrees of train and sight watching. As I plan ahead, there are things that I like and things that I don't. I am not into amusement parks. I love the high view as in cityscapes and landscapes. I do love architecture, but I do not duplicate my pics, of styles, too often.<br />
<br />
As I planned this excursion, I wanted on south side watching location. Amtrak stops at 128, so this station had a good advantage. The alternatives were to go into South Station or Back Bay and took a local commuter to another station. The arrangement of platforms overcame (if set up was right) the high platform problem. I wanted a northside watching location, as well. I chose the Lowell Line because it had the Downeaster. I did look at other sites on the line. However, I change lines when I thoughts the trains on that line were not running. I had looked at Lynn, MA. It was a place I lived, way back then. It was high and central platform. Only one other stop, outbound and before the lines split. It had a low platform. The schedule was not ideal, but I could make it work. But I chose the alternative. Maybe next time, I will use better.Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-3207204562318688782018-07-23T12:44:00.000-07:002018-07-23T12:44:44.511-07:00Midday and AfternoonFrom Cedar Grove I made my way to the Airport Station to see the Blue Line. I normally would not bother with the Blue Line. However, the Blue Line is duel power. That is, while underground, it is third rail, which is interesting but not something that I would video. Once it surfaces, the blue line is a trolley or overhead electric. It is at The Airport station that the pantographs go up going outbound and come down inbound.<br />

<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/LA5iZLK_NgA/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LA5iZLK_NgA?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After Airport Station, I make my way to North Station. You may remember that I had planned to take commuter rail out the Lowell Line and watch at Anderson. Also, than in looking at the schedule last week, I learned that trains were being substituted by buses along the line due to track work. I than chose to go out another line to photograph and video North Station Trains.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I arrived at North Station and found out that I misread the schedule. The Lowell Line trains were running and was only substituted by buses, on weekends. I think that when I checked the schedule last week it was on a weekend, so no trains then. I now had the decision to either change my itinerary back to Lowell or take my substitute. I chose to take the Lowell Line. At Anderson I spent a long afternoon watching seven trains, one which was Amtrak Downeaster.<br />

After these three hours of railfanning, I made my way back to North Station and out past Copley Square to Northeastern University Station on the Green Line. This is the first above ground station on this branch of the Green Line. When I first visited Boston, the Green lines major cars were the old PCC Electric Streetcar. Some people call the Green Line the Green Line Trolley. When I worked their the alternated the PCC with the LRV, a newer light rail vehicle. There are several generations of LRV's on the Green Line and the old PCC cars were move to Mattapan Line which I saw first.</div>

I was thinking what is better: bus, train, or plane. It depends, really, on how much time you want to use to get there. A bus trip, across country is a bit much, as far as I am concerned. A few hour trip is fine. Buses are good for medium to short trips. Trains are good for more and longer trips. If you have time, a coast to coast might be nice but for travel overnight or within a day, a train is comfortable and allows to see the landscape going by. Trains allow for more movement. Train walking is a time honored exercise. There is always the cafe car to visit for a drink and food.<br />
<br />
My trip began at 6:30 in the evening and I would arrive in Boston on the next morning around 7:30. I decided to get off at Route 128 and spend a couple of hours train watching. One my way I spent some time in the cafe.<br />
<br />
Upon arrival I began to film. In two hours I videoed 13 trains, including 11 MBTA Commuter Trains, one Amtrak Northeast Regional, and one Amtrak Acela Express.<br />
<br />

<br />
Now I take the commuter rail into South Station to get the Red Line to Ashmont. Where I board the Mattapan Trolley<br />
<br />

<br />
I take the trolley to Ceder Grove to watch for an half hour or so:<br />

Entering the imposing facade up the steps. Main Street Station has always, as far as I remember, been a landmark on the Richmond Landscape.<br />

I decided to spend the time before my train left, exploring a bit. On my way into town, the day before, I did stop by Main Street Station, to look around. My main objective was to check out the parking situation. This morning, I stopped by the Virginia Historical Society to use their library. I only touched on it, not really being in the mood. I have been doing genealogy here and at the State Archives.</div>
<br />
I took a drive accross the 14th Street Bridge to what use to be Hull Street Station for the Southern Railroad. Now it is now The Richmond Railroad Museum, operated by the Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society:<br />

I stopped near a railroad crossing to get a drink. I bought the drink and was heading back to the car when a CSX freight blows it horn at the crossing. Than I heard the horn of another train and it was Amtrak but on the far track. Later, I did get video of one freight.<br>

I was not planning to watch, but to look for the better place to watch and to be used later. It came unexpectantly.Gregoryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08476303663255564132noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7651158938820678988.post-52475120842673304782018-07-15T18:05:00.000-07:002018-07-15T18:05:22.987-07:00Unfortunate Setting.<div dir="ltr">
At some point between when my last post began and when it was posted, I came across some very unfortunate information. I planned to take the commuter rail north from North Station to a point on the route of the Downeaster. In testing my links on my prospective itinerary, I found the trains on this route was not running this week, due to track work. The stations were being served with buses and the Downeaster was changing routes into Boston.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
This meant revisions to the old itinerary. I try to come up with the Haverhill line or another one. So I am examining other lines out of North Station and how they effect my trip. I will do that even as I go. </div>

As I was city preparing for my trip this week, I not plan to watch any trains this afternoon. What I did though as I was looking for a place to read or a few minutes, and to prepare my Sunday school lesson for Tomorrow, which I will be teaching. I thought about maybe reading a little bit in the train station, or on the platform. So that was led me To carry station, and I watched the 3:10 arrive. </div>

<div dir="ltr">
<br></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I did take some reading while sitting on the platform in the shade. I'm comfortable today temperature wise. I decide to wait a couple of hours and read here at the station. I'm waiting for the roughly 5:30 train to come in, the Carolinian, South. I have never watch it come back so this is unique. Also I am watching at the train station rather than another place along the line, which I usually prefer.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Of course this means taking my video off the camera tonight, it may be added, it maybe not. About to go in take our some comfort station items, do some reading indoors in the air conditioning. I still have decided about taking my camera DSLR. As far as I am thinking Now, I may not need, or best not use that camera. Most of my watching will be trains, and video rather then Still pictures. Whoever's pictures I take common gimme taken with a phone. The other option is to take the video, and drove off still pictures from the video.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br></div>
<div dir="ltr">
The Carolinian finally comes, I read until then:</div>

Dinner at home, take out, and edit video and take it off the camera.</div>
